MARGIN LONDON BUYS SHOWROOM GROUP
London, England, 17 Mar. 2006

Margin, the London-based trade show for young and indie brands, has purchased the Showroom Group and its websites. The Showroom Group’s successful Internet site www.Spaceshowroom.com enables brands to upload their line sheets for accredited buyers to browse online and download at their convenience. More than 2,500 buyers are registered to view the more than 100 line sheets on the site.

The twice-yearly Margin exhibition was established in 2002 to create an affordable platform for new and young brands.

Next fall’s fashion trends

Recently we checked out Margin London, the leading alternative streetwear tradeshow in the UK. Here’s a quick rundown of the major trends from the show:

Vintage: When will this not be a trend? Get Cutie from Brighton showed 50s-inspired big bold floral print dresses that were snapped up by buyers. D4 Discus featured vintage inspired prints on 70s style maxi dresses and eco-friendly label Our World Recycled had similarly glamorous sun dresses. Yamama did Me Decade silhouettes in the form of mohair knitwear.

Military: Army jackets were plentiful, as were camouflage prints and details such as epaulettes. Apestein’s U.S. military influenced collection featured fitted crinkled cheesecloth shirts. Southwest Clothing fused army influence with fluorescent graphics, another strong trend.

Rock n Roll: This trend is still going strong, too. Apestein’s far out t-shirt graphics were heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix and 60s psychedelia in general. Wendy’s rock belts had previously been worn by Sid Vicious and Johnny Rotten. Lost Property’s graphics were based on t-shirts worn by John Lennon and Frank Zappa.

Tailoring: Although Margin is best known for streetwear, the show is also becoming a destination for more formal tailoring. French men’s and womenswear brand Kulte combined vintage American shirting and striped knits with slim, satin dinner suits. Minimalist Swedish womenswear label Reflective Diffusion put the emphasis on superior quality well-cut basics; detailing was limited to the seams in a range of tops, capes and dresses. Spanish label El Ganso fused tailoring with sports details, such as felt stripes on heritage fabrics and formal coats.

Show stoppers. PREMIERING A LARGER VENUE AT LINDLEY HALL, SW1,  STREETWEAR SHOW MARGIN ATTRACTED 60 BRANDS, AMONG THEM A HOST OF NEW NAMES. MWB TAKES A LOOK AT SOME KEY TEES AND CATCHES UP WITH SOME NEW ARRIVALS.   SPOTLIGHT ON...  Joker & Thief  If you're after some novelty Tshirts this season, new label Joker & Thief could be worth looking at. Offering T-shirts with messages, such as 'I love you', on the inside of the bottom seam - the seam can be lifted up to reveal the message. Founded ten months ago by Tom Banfield a potential bestseller is the magic ball T-shirt, which features numbers on the front with answers corresponding to the numbers on the inside of the shirt. People can ask the magic ball a question, guess a number, and look inside the T-shirt for the answer.  SPOTLIGHT ON...   Detour Premium Apparel London-based Detour Premium Apparel is the brainchild of graphic designer Andrew Gourlay, who started designing logos for tees and selling them at Sunday Up Market on Brick Lane. Featuring a range of his own prints as well as some from various European artists, every design is limited to 250 pieces and each tee retails for £36. Gourlay is hoping to attract independent retailers from across the UK.  SPOTLIGHT ON...  Gustav Schmint The collections from fashion and textile student Laura Gledhill don't stop at clothes  they have a life of their own as well. The names of her collections , Gustav Schmint and Heidi Seeker,  are characters in their own right, and customers can log on to her website to see what Gustav and Heidi are getting up to. The line is made up of knits and T-shirts, all sporting heavy logos and graphics such as a Rubik's cube effect in bold colours such as green, blue and pink.
