Feeling the Love +

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

“As usual Margin helps me to find the quirkiest clothing ranges for men and women and also accessories. I enjoyed this season very much with a great selection in jewellery and a strong womenswear display. I made a lot of orders which saves me having to run around agencies to find new blood. Brilliant show to find on season stock too! Thank you Margin!”

6 Aug. 2009 LONDON S/S 10 TRADE SHOW REPORT Following the departure of TBC and The Park, the London trade show scene for streetwear and young fashion has been far from overcrowded. The existing Margin and Pure Spirit fairs, however, continued to deliver powerful showcases. Over at the intimate and inherently charming show that is Margin (Aug. 2-3), a fusion of 80s disco and Dynasty glam existed alongside a more crisp and fresh alternative. Incorporating sequins with gusto, the punk-inspired label Misfit presented a black hoodie smothered entirely in sequins, each applied by hand. It didnt come cheap but we had to make at least one, enthused Lena Jansen about the collections ultimate showpiece. Going down a more utilitarian path, the London label Arms carried on with its raison detre, namely to provide practical yet satisfyingly quirky clothing for studio based boys and girls. Newcomer Germaine Minette, meanwhile, catered to men exclusively. The labels finely tuned spring collection spanned the entire menswear spectrum, where suits sat comfortably next to cotton shorts and checked runner vests, all of which would impress the modern Dandy with a sense of fun. Being the all-encompassing showcase that it is, Margin didnt exclude denim from the mix. This season, Oak made a welcome return to the show, nestled next to the premium denim player, Trousers London. On the footwear front, Finnish shoe brand St.Vacant served up bespoke styles for men and women that are ergonomical but far from dowdy. To put it in designer Janne Laxs words, its an aesthetic that is timeless but in a peculiar way. Come to think of it, that may well go to describe what works best in London right now. Although the event seemed more quiet than usual (no figures were released), visitors which did come through the door were high caliber and included buyers from Beams, United Arrows, Elephant, Bread & Honey, House of Fraser, Fenwicks, Top Man and Asos. MISSION + Margin exists to promote young upscale streetwear labels. The Original and the best platform for new talent for the over 6 years, Margin was established to help new labels reach a wider buying and press audience. Margin was created out of necessity. Retailers travel the world looking for the next big thing but are never going to find up-and-coming labels at a show whose costs prohibit fresh talent. The main drive of Margin was to establish a show where new young labels could find an affordable platform.

Menswear Buyer MWB
Feature on the London Store
and Buyers at Bread & Honey

When frenchman Laurent Roure - former Bond international manager and current Margin trade show consultant - opened his own retail store in East London two years ago, he got out a book on cockney rhyming slang to find a name for it. Tom Bottomley talks taking money with the owner of Bread & Honey. His friend Odysseas Constantine was setting up the Margin trade show with the idea to promote and show new designers, brands and labels and make it *dynamic and affordable to do.* Having been approached by a lot of new street brands during his time at Bond, Roure was asked to join Constantine to help him build up the reputation of the show. *It's very exciting to be able to help the new kids in the business and to discover new talents,* Roure comments. *Some of them have grown with the show and are now recognised brands - like Supreme Being and Lazy Oaf. It's also useful for keeping in touch with styles and trends and for talking to other retailers and gauging what's going on in the market.* Initially full-time on Margin, Roure now works on it part-time as a consultant, as well as bringing in new brands for Constantine's new concept spaceshowroom.com - a showroom on the internet which is *the next big venture.* Roure has already signed up Rushmoor, J shoes and Revolver Jeans among others for the concept.
