Ruby Foo Exhibitor Website
Ruby Foo was a dream that came true. Knowing absolutely nothing about fashion, manufacturing, marketing or distribution, Lucy decided to set up her own illustrated women’s clothing label Ruby Foo and launched at Glastonbury 2002 and then went on to feature at the Big Chill festival. The label grew very slowly and was sold initially at Camden Lock market and in 2003 Lucy was entered into the Shell Livewire Young Entrepreneur of the Year award - when she represented the East and South East region overcoming high competition to be one of ten finalists in the Shell Livewire Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Ruby Foo didn’t win - but we thought out of 1500 entrants coming in the top ten was pretty good. In 2004, Ruby Foo exhibited as part of the Margin Streetwear Show during London Fashion Week and succeeded in getting the winter 2004/05 range sold to House of Fraser stores across the UK. Ruby Foo is currently on a gap year style experience…watch this space
Fall fashion trends. Plus: Luxury Fashion Network One of our London correspondents got the inside scoop at Margin London, the leading alternative streetwear tradeshow in the UK. Here are the Fall/Winter 2004 trends she saw:
Fabrics:
*The one major Fall 2004 trend running through the fashion industry is the use of more traditional and luxurious fabrics, such as cashmere.
*Sporty baseball caps were re-worked this season in herringbone tweed at Block Headwear.
Colors:
*At both the men’s and women’s shows, pink was the most used color, with bubblegum pink being a favorite.
*Shades of red and purple, as well as grey and black, were also popular for next winter.
Prints and Inspiration:
*From cute baby deer to birds, wildlife was a common influence. Quirkily re-worked at Lazy Oaf, the bird print could probably be credited as an homage to celebrity ornithologist Bill Oddie, while a vintage ceramic Bambi was the inspiration for LA label Gentle Fawn’s mascot.
*Elsewhere designers are still developing hand drawn sketches and doodles from previous seasons for t-shirt and sweatshirt graphics. The label Yes even embroidered their signature range of sensitive line drawings this time.
Transforming the bar area of the womens edition of Margin into an artists studio, Sarah Gregory converts erotic imagery into fine art with traditional paint applications.
Sarah Gregory’s most recent exhibition of drawings and paintings was entitled ‘The Twenty Five Loves Of Silas Holmes’ at the Space Gallery in Pimlico.
Three of the works were reproduced in the book ‘Where Is Silas?’. Like the larger than life oils presented here, the ‘Silas’ series was of nudes and semi-nudes taken from the pages of Playboy and Penthouse published in the 60’s and 70’s. Quite explicit, the paintings transform the images into something closer to portraiture.
In the last few years Sarah has been painting private commissions as well as record sleeves for S Express, Derrick May, Nico. She collaborated with Goldie on work for an exhibition at the Blue Note gallery where she subsequently had her own show.
Graphic Designer Lucy Cullingford displayed a range of canvases in the entrance of the womens edition of Margin.
As well as her graphic and art work, Lucy has also found time to establish a range of printed womens clothing called Ruby Foo which she exhibited for the first time at Margin.
Danielle Roberts installed her printed perspex chairs, footstools, plaques and clothes-hangers in the Magazine reading area at the womens edition of Margin.
Practical items that can be customised to suit their surroundings, the perspex clothes-hangers can be printed to match particular retail environments and store- or label- branding.
Following on from the Margin August 2003 T-shirt design by Remi/Rough, Margin invited Boston-based graphic supremos Tank Theory to remix the Margin logo into an orignal graphic.
We were so pleased with their handywork, we not only printed the t-shirts with the image but also slapped it on the show-guide and Margin/Ubiquity collaboration CD.
The limited-edition t-shirts were supplied and printed by Murina, an American-made t-shirt company with distribution in the UK.
Tank Theory exhibited their range at Margin in Aug 2003 and Feb 2004.
Ubiquity Records from California made their UK debut at Margin with their range of music-influenced Mens- and womens-wear.
Ubiquity Records from California made their UK debut at Margin with their range of music-influenced Mens- and womens-wear.They also sponsored the music for both the Mens and womens editions and provided the soundtrack to both shows.
In addition, Ubiquity Records produced a limited-edition Margin CD for visitors featuring tracks from fresh artists such as Greyboy and Nobody combined with rare funk finds from their extensive catalogue.

As well as exhibiting their new clothing line at Margin, They Made Me Do It were invited to install a selection of their artists work at the Mens show.
They Made Me Do It is a collective made up of 12 of the best artists emerging from the UK Graffiti scene, including the considerable talents of: ASTEK / BLEACH / BUSK / CHU / DANE / INSA / KOREY / SHUCKS / SNUG / SOLO ONE / TIZER / WISH1.
For the February 2004 edition of the mens show, Margin invited British clothing label Subsurface to work their graphic and illustrative magic in the bar area.
The result was an all-encompassing and engrossing sextych representing their artwork which also spelled out the word “MARGIN”.
