Premium showing at Margin London
Thursday, 05 August 2010

Despite the ongoing uncertainty of the economic climate, the August 2010 edition of independent show Margin consolidated it's position as the most directional & credible UK trade event for streetwear and young fashion which, even at the 19th edition, still has the pulling power to attract leading retailers from quality stores, many of whom do not attend regular tradeshows.

Carefully edited, the premium selection of new and established labels, handpicked to exhibit at Margin, proved too strong a draw for key independent streetwear purveyors including Slam City Skates and Supra from London, Ran and Wood from Manchester, The Consortium and Richmond Classics from Bournemouth, Switch from the Isle of Wight, Urban Industry from Eastbourne, Cooshti and My Yard from Bristol, and Wellgosh from Leicester.

Visiting buyers and press enthused about the mix of credible established brands such as Silas (who selected Margin for their trade show debut to mark their return to Europe after a four year absence), Obey, WeSC, Makia, Gravis, Duffs, and Dephect, alongside new brands making their trade launch at the show, such as 1ina100, Emilythepemily, AnyForty, KNK, Trikki, and Eva Evanovich.

Unlike many other larger trade events who welcome all-comers in an attempt to swell visitor statistics, Margin is open to buyers, press, multi-label agents & distributors only, so exhibitors were able to devote their time to dealing with serious visitors from key UK & international stores and magazines intent on making contact and doing business.

As always, Margin welcomed independent stores and boutiques from across the UK and internationally that the show is well known for attracting (such as Ace, American Retro, Boy Parker, FortyFive, Hardware, Ju-Ju, Kuji, Kusje, Lunacy, Pie in the Sky, Potassium, Soho Hip, Social, and Tyto), as well as drawing a strong following of multiples including Ark Clothing, Frontline, Joy, Moist, and Triple-S, and online players of all sizes including ASOS, Chemical Records, CX London, Extreme Pie, Grindstore, Mr Shunk, and Surfdome.

From large stores such as Bentalls and Urban Outfitters, to leading boutiques like Sarah Coggles and Paradis, Margin welcomed successful stores of all sizes, stores who remain successful by staying informed and on top of credible new brands that can generate retail excitement.

The 19th edition of the longest-running independent trade show in London also welcomed key international stores from Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, and Japan, all keen to tap into UK streetwear & young fashion at Margin.

The next edition of Margin London will take place in February 2011. More information at www.margin.tv and www.margin.tv/pressroom

My Yard SS10 Artist Collection
15 June, 2010

After a brief manufacturing delay, the Summer collection of tees and sweats from Bristol born My Yard have finally hit the shelves. The My Yard boys took a little extra time to produce the new collection to ensure that all prints and materials met the exact standard they expected, and it appears its been worth the wait.
The My Yard Summer collection contains a number of T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the work of some of the UKs most exciting and talented artists. You ll find the work of Batman, Dirty Thirty, Ben Normanton, Andy Council, Cheba and Nikill on a wide range of different coloured tees and sweats. I first picked up on My Yard at the Margin London tradeshow earlier this year and was massively impressed with the samples. Ben Normantons work is my personal favourite - clean, punchy graphics with some great illustrations.
The new range is currently available to by from the My Yard Store on Park Street in Bristol and is expected at retailers any day now, including Urban Industry and Chemical Records. The My Yard boys recently shot a lookbook for their collection, in Japan. Check some shots out below.
Margin London (Recap) 23 February, 2010 Last weekend we were fortunate enough to be invited along to the Margin trade exhibition in London to get a sneak peak at upcoming collections from a number of brands coming out of the UK and Europe. Over the two days we met a whole load of creative people and were able to see their forthcoming collections first hand, all in one space, which was a really valuable thing. For us it was all about the UK brands on show, with collections ranging from accessories to full menswear & womenswear lines and everything in between. There was certainly a lot to get round and see and as a result we made the trip over both days just to make sure we-d seen it all. With both established and start-up brands on show, Margin certainly had it all covered. Mr. Wingate Great little brand from London with a big range of graphic tees and sweats. The attention to print and garment materials here really got us going, especially the use of puff inks on a few items. Check out the pub series too (see The Macbeth tee above/left) which we felt was rather special. Mr Wingate is available from the new studio/shop in East London, or online here. My Yard Bristol based artist focused clothing label with a big selection of bright t-shirts and sweatshirts. Their collection features the fine artistic talents of some of the UKs best street artists and illustrators, including the likes of Nikill and Ben Normanton. Available through select UK retailers as well as the My Yard store in Bristol keep an eye out for embroidered polo shirts and more coming for SS10 soon. I Am Five Fresh new brand launched in 2009 with a hefty selection of T-shirts. Designs come with both added comedy value and just straight up simplicity. I loved the intrinsic British nature of the shirt designs, with the queens royal emblem and Sherlock Holmes silhouette making an appearance. Keep your eyes peeled for loads more from these guys soon. Ultramega Brand new T-shirt brand based in London with some huge prints. Definitely one to keep an eye on for the future. Check out more of the designs and purchase a few here. Lazy Oaf - One of the more established brands at Margin but still great to see what this brand have planned for 2010. With a new store set to open on March 4th and a lot of exciting product releases scheduled, this is set to be a big year for Lazy Oaf. Look out for the new 5 panel caps and some pretty exciting T-shirt designs dropping soon. Mr. Jones Watches Crispin Jones creates limited watches with very individual twists. The Decider helps you deal with those tough decisions, The Cyclops offers a more relaxed way to tell the time and The Accurate is the most accurate wristwatch you can buy, the hour hand reads remember and the minute hand reads you will die. All these styles and more are available here. Zelley Bespoke Our personal favourite brand on show at Margin, a bespoke sneaker lace company based in Norwich. Zelley Bespoke allows you the opportunity to design your own custom sneaker laces any colour, any shape or size, but with a very special touch. Each lace is tipped with a variety of metals and gemstones of your choice. Chose anything from silver tips with cubic zirconia all the way through gold and rubies to platinum tipped laces with inset diamonds! A huge look for any sneakerhead. Keep your eyes on The Daily Street for more from all the brands above. Big thanks to Margin for having us along to the event, we-ll see you again next year. More info on the show here. Margin London Autumn/Winter 2010-11 Edition Despite being the longest-running independent trade event in London, Margin remains a fringe affair and an untapped resource for emerging street wear and young fashion labels. These brands are born out of personal passions often created with handcrafted touches and finishes with local sourcing at the core whether it be the UK or Latvia. DENIM Laundry Maid Jeans are a relatively new name in the premium denim market utilising the British tendency for expert tailoring to produce high quality cuts with meticulous attention to detail and perfect constructional finishing. Futurism inspires Hypnosis fashion-forward denim collection, littered with deconstructed detailing from off-centre button fly fastening, twisted seams and dropped-crotch cuts. ACCESSORIES Margin is a hotbed for quirky one-off jewellery brands. We loved Sansonnet, a Tokyo based label whose pretty pieces resembled re-worked antiques meets kiddy-craft kit - very Harajuku. Hannah Makes Things is another fun brand, specialising in pendants ranging from mini donuts to rainbows to cassette tapes! One of the highlight accessories concepts was Sneakart a range of durable but removable, art-inspired stickers that can be adapted to customise any sports shoe shape. GRAPHIC TEES As expected, graphic tees abound at street wear shows and Margin was no exception. Each label seem to major in art first, t-shirt printing second producing some original graphic ideas in the process. Bristol-based label My Yard commissions local graphic artists to produce designs for the tee label in a range of eye-popping colours. Conquer is rooted in fine-art with the design team producing intricate illustrations which are then applied using a specially developed printing method to ensure the clearest transfer. Finally, Junkfunk is a Brighton-based label entrenched in typography and revolutionary-flavoured graphic design (think Spanish civil war slogans and Cold War motifs). READY TO WEAR There was something for everyone, RTW-wise. Hysteric Asteria designer Alexia Kirmitsi has developed a reversible webbed/inverted knit technique that adorns oversized jumpers and trims jersey dresses. Brighton-based Jojo & Mac produced knitted jumpers and cardigans with cutesy motifs like all-over YSL style strawberries and large placement cats. Germaine Minette brought a range of detailed mens shirting with subtle panelled collars, contrast inserts and lining and wonky welt pockets. 21dgrs are a truly global brand, designed in Hamburg, based and manufactured in Bali, sold in the far-reaches of the Southern hemisphere- even Byron Bay! The collection is diverse with hand-dyed silk dresses, printed tees and detailed washed sweats. Found comprised of unique items creatively salvaged from vintage garments and fabrics. Hannah Makes Things Lazy Oaf Lua Lua Found Laundry Maid Sansonnet 21dgrs Conquer Found Germain MInette Hypnosis Hysteric Asteria Jojo and Mac Junk Funk My Yard Revenge Sneakart Sansonnet
