International Fashion Focus at Margin London Fashion Event Article Posted June 2, 2009 The February 2009 edition of Margin, the London tradeshow for upscale streetwear and directional tailoring, saw a significant increase in buyers from across Europe & Japan driven by the weaker pound and stronger Euro, and the August 2009 edition is on track to be the most international mix of exhibiting brands to date. Buyers from across Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and The Netherlands descended on The Music Rooms in Mayfair to visit Margin and, courtesy of a wallet-friendly exchange rate, source more affordable and directional wares from UK designers. Equally UK buyers reported that the stronger Euro meant cutting back on overseas trade shows and instead decided to buy on the doorstep from brands at Margin. For UK buyers still keen to source unique international designers, without the expense of overseas travel, Margin is welcoming many overseas brands to the August 2009 edition of the exhibition. Already confirmed are exhibitors from countries including Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand, who will be showcasing their ranges alongside new and young UK designers.

Sportswear International February 2005

Printwise, entire garden scenes replaced single flowers, especially at the upscale streetwear show Margin, which ran at London’s Music Rooms, also from February 6-7. New Japanese brand VAMPSTAR, a fresh addition to Margin this season, went for the psychedelic version, while TYLER preferred a more naturalistic approach with a strong graphic undertone. The gothic motive craze of the last couple of seasons has given way to a far more domestic vibe. For a/w 2005-06, designers gave skulls and demons the boot, and went back to basics with everyday object prints such as light bulbs (SYNDROME), sunglasses (I SAVED LAURENCE) and pendant clocks (DEPHECT). Political messages mingled with humorous slogans such as HICK’s pig wording the slogan “I Stink, Therefore I Ham.”

At Margin, exhibitors, organizers and buyers alike were as fun-loving as ever, but focused enough to get down to serious business as well. The show is still, fittingly, marginal, but with big boys like XLARGE making an entrance, we hope that the intimate charm of the event will remain to be enjoyed for seasons to come.
