6 Aug. 2009 LONDON S/S 10 TRADE SHOW REPORT Following the departure of TBC and The Park, the London trade show scene for streetwear and young fashion has been far from overcrowded. The existing Margin and Pure Spirit fairs, however, continued to deliver powerful showcases. Over at the intimate and inherently charming show that is Margin (Aug. 2-3), a fusion of 80s disco and Dynasty glam existed alongside a more crisp and fresh alternative. Incorporating sequins with gusto, the punk-inspired label Misfit presented a black hoodie smothered entirely in sequins, each applied by hand. It didnt come cheap but we had to make at least one, enthused Lena Jansen about the collections ultimate showpiece. Going down a more utilitarian path, the London label Arms carried on with its raison detre, namely to provide practical yet satisfyingly quirky clothing for studio based boys and girls. Newcomer Germaine Minette, meanwhile, catered to men exclusively. The labels finely tuned spring collection spanned the entire menswear spectrum, where suits sat comfortably next to cotton shorts and checked runner vests, all of which would impress the modern Dandy with a sense of fun. Being the all-encompassing showcase that it is, Margin didnt exclude denim from the mix. This season, Oak made a welcome return to the show, nestled next to the premium denim player, Trousers London. On the footwear front, Finnish shoe brand St.Vacant served up bespoke styles for men and women that are ergonomical but far from dowdy. To put it in designer Janne Laxs words, its an aesthetic that is timeless but in a peculiar way. Come to think of it, that may well go to describe what works best in London right now. Although the event seemed more quiet than usual (no figures were released), visitors which did come through the door were high caliber and included buyers from Beams, United Arrows, Elephant, Bread & Honey, House of Fraser, Fenwicks, Top Man and Asos. Monday, 3 August 2009 Margin 09 Today me and Big Ron were invited down to the Margin Trade Show at the Music Rooms. Margin is Londons only independent trade show that hand picks brands from around the world that they feel will benefit from the exposure of a London trade show. Retailers, buyers and distributors are all invited down along with the press. Here are a pick of mine and Ronnies favourite brands... Vestal featured as an established brand and it was a good chance to check out some of their new colletion... A brand called Germain Minette had a really interesting background, they were looking to move their brand into the European market after doing really well in Asia as well as having a flagship stored planned for opening in Shanghai. New label Unequal Balance were launching their first collection at Margin and with a solid range of prints they also had a couple of cut and sew bits... Trousers London a brand I was introduced to last year were back and the update from the camp was that the brand is doing very well, stocked in two places in London and still seeing good trade overseas. The quality of the denim was the first thing you noticed and also some of the attention to detail was encouraging... Another brand I saw last year was Conquer whos designs were concentrated on etchey pencil illustrations. The ladies vest top was said to be one of their best sellers. Ladies brand Jojo & Mac had a nice, playful collection. Bits included cardigans, pullovers and woolly jumpers... The brand Arms definetly stole the show for me, their whole line was cut and sew with a very clean and classic feel to the collection. They are based in Dublin and are looking for more stockists nationwide. If this first collection is anything to go by then I expect to be seeing and hearing a lot more from Arms... On the whole Margin looks like a great success, in this current climate its good to see new brands working hard to make a name for themselves. Not just throwing out prints either, its plain to see a lot of investment, time and design has gone into the majority of brands showcasing. Shout to Odyseas the man behind Margin... More information on all the brands that featured can be found on the Margin website here.

Sportswear International Report

LONDON REPORT: MARGIN ABUZZ, SPIRIT DISAPPOINTS 12 Feb. 2009 London’s trade shows for the A/W 2009 season proved to be something of a desolate affair. With the absence of TBC and The Park, Margin (Feb. 8-9) and Pure’s Spirit section (Feb. 8-10) were the only haunts left showcasing young fashion. When visiting Margin, located again at the Music Rooms in Mayfair, the prevalent tee brigade is impossible to ignore. To mention two of the most notable players, the new label Long Clothing figuratively focuses on elongated styles that can be worn as dresses or tops. Graphic prints come in two choices – faded or in full ink. Created according to an equally simplified formula, Mr Wingate’s tees feature foam prints typically applied around the neck and shoulder area – something that gives the garments a certain “angelic” touch. On the denim front, Trousers London showed at Margin for the third consecutive season. In line with previous offerings, dry denim is the deal, allowing details such as carefully engineered seams and checked pocket linings to come into full focus. Arms is a promising newcomer offering clean, quirky separates for men and women. Designed with practicality in mind and targeting creative, studio-based folks such as graphic designers, key elements include nifty details such as little pen loops and reinforced elbow patches. The womenswear label Miksa is a new entry in the fair trade/organic category. Signified by a sporty aesthetic the label’s A/W 2009 range encompasses casual tops and bomber-style jackets complemented by a range of chunky, hand-knitted alpaca pieces given a romantic spin with the help of pretty ribbon detailing. On the footwear front, hot up-and-comer Rae Jones marked her debut at Margin with a strong collection of comfy yet distinctly stylish shoes and boots; and US label 80%20 impressed with its collection of footwear featuring the celebrated signature wedge heel that is concealed to offer the wearer extra height without a spiky heel in sight. Spirit, Pure’s showcase of young fashion, was in for a good start when it was reinvented a few seasons ago, but this season the show was overshadowed by a disappointing transformation. Presumably attempting to economize and convey a streetier edge, the show consisted of messy concrete floors and open-concept booths, which only served to jar with the brands on show, most of which specialized in neat, feminine products (with the exception of a few denim players such as Monkee Genes and Applebottoms). The disappointment among exhibitors was apparent and visitors were confused by an inconsistent, if not poorly edited, brand line-up. There’s no doubt that the international tradeshow scene is saturated, but in London, there’s a gaping hole waiting to be filled for the market TBC once served. —Emma Holmqvist

Coolhunting.com
Three Ethical Denim Brands by Leonora Oppenheim At the Margin London tradeshow earlier this week a boggling 90 labels were on show, 60 of which were brand new proving that in its sixth year Margin is still the place to go to find new talent in streetwear. Keeping our eye out for organic and fair trade labels in particular, we were pleased to find three new denim brands that we think will be making some noise on the fashion scene with their collections for Spring/Summer 09. Trousers London appeared to be the most directional label with unusual tailoring not often seen in denim and beautiful detailing including zips, braiding and bespoke silk pocket linings. Using organic cotton from Turkey, the jeans are handmade in Italy. Their first collection for Fall/Winter 08 catered only to the boys, but this season girls will get some Trouser action too. NU is a French label that made its London debut at Margin this week. A funky street brand with a touch of the eco-rebel about them, they have styles for men and women in varying weights of organic African denim. Their Fair Trade production unit is located in Tunisia, where they have a closed loop water system for washing and dyeing the denim. Designer Maxime Guillon says,

Yesterday I ventured down to Margin to check out the show & see the Boards we had created , & get a general over view of one of my favourite shows in LONDON. 1stly there was no TBC this season & PURE was on, but I wanted to hear & see the traffic that hopefully would pass through. At 1st sight it seemed busy enough for 1.00pm on a Monday afternoon, but I went a dug a little deeper to see what was good & what I found interesting. SO I am not going to give it to you by section...I am just going to Ramble about the labels that I like. VIOLENT ELEGANCE Stefan & Jana have got something here. This is a T-Shirt company based in Berlin & they are very inspired by The Bauhaus. Simple Prints with excellent colour choices of Fluros, Black & White. The stark contrast in the colours & monochrome mixes makes something so simple into something very special. I real like what they are & probably my favourite thing in the show. They have been going for a year now & with their ethic & style...I think they will be around for a few more years to come. SHOE MISSY Ok You all know I got a thing for Shoes...& these shoes are no exception. Anna has been at this for 4 years. She started making commissioned orders & offering a Bespoke service, & then moved on to On Line sales which accounts for appx 60% of the sales made. Love a good On Line story : ) Last season was all based on the UK Burlesque scene, & this season is all based on 50s travel. Excellent shoes at very competitive prices. ME & ZENA?Really nice quirky & pop jewelry. No your usual stuff & very on point. The pendants are really nice & there is a lot to like. BROWN NY A new venture for this company who makes some excellent Coats in Fleece, Wool & Knits. As well as some nice corsetry & dresses. There are even a few cheap & cheerful dresses that would a few ladies I know happy. It is the 1st jump into the UK & Europe, so stop by & show them some love. PITCHBLACK No here is a man who has his eye on the Luxury Lifestyle market & intends to attack it bit by bit & make his mark. Started by making bespoke orders for the soft tailoring that they offer, & now have expanded the collection into something a little more, & something that opens up the vision & intent of Pitchblack. Good stuff. KYOTO DENIM Always like a good story behind a product. Kyoto DEnim have taken all the technique for making traditional Kimonos and applied it to denim. The way they dye & print is all following an ancient tradition. A time consuming process that ends up with a really nice, special product. They are Jeans, but not as we know it. GONSALVES & HALL I was drawn to them by their Buttons, yes they use Liberty Print Buttons on all their product which for me was a nice touch. Really nice coats & separates. Lots of flowing ties around the neck lines & waist that create really extensive bows & the like. I like this line & can see it doing rather well. INFECTED I like Eddie Williams, the owner of INFECTED, he really knows what his label is about & what he is trying to do. They have been going for a while now & have a big presence on line &have been regular suppliers to URBAN OUTFITTERS. All their product is UK based & UK inspired...touching on the Multi Cultures of the UK & how they have sprung subcultures that continue to inspire the world over. Loved their shirting...excellent. MYSTIC BULGARIA I was curious about this label, as I wanted to know if they were from Bulgaria or was it just a name. But yes they are from Bulgaria, & they have something of their own going on. Their Denim was quirky & had a Lolita feel to it. The printed Satins of next season offer another angle to what it is they are doing. Nice people & good to see something like that coming out of Bulgaria. Keep it Up. VAULT Loved the colour palette...& the colour palette was inspired by just that...a Bank Vault with all the steel & the colours that reflect of the metal etc. Really nice product & the concept is packaged really well. This label would sit well in any store...& they are such nice people too. Modern Urban wear & Classic Tailoring...you can not really go wrong. JOHNNY LOVE The missing link between Hugo Boss & Levis was how John described it to me, & yes I can see it. All about shape & fit...patterns take precedent here. I did like the vibe of the label & more to the point liked how they looked to securing their Local Norwegian market before attempting to take on the world. Loved the Nylon Jackets...really nice, & yes...the fit is Good. ELANORE DE RUUK Now I really like creative pattern making & Elanore does not let me down. She has some excellent pieces in her collection & the panelling & way the garments work look really nice & you can see that this lady is passionate about what she is doing. If I could say that there was one label a little lost at Margin it is Elanores...not because it is not right, more that is it out there & has no place to put it. Elanore has some thing special going on...take a look & you will see what I mean. TROUSERS LONDON Hands down my No 1 of Margin...consistency is a good thing & these people do just that. They stay with their vision & there jeans are excellent. & for a basic loving person like me...thanks for doing a basic 5 pocket for old school fools like me. No on the real go & buy this denim, if only to be working with such excellent people. Well that is my brief report on Margin...but to get it for real...go their yourself & check it out. You may find what i say is all rubbish, as you may find something else that gets you...but you will not unless you get down there. Be Well.
