Premium showing at Margin London
Thursday, 05 August 2010

Despite the ongoing uncertainty of the economic climate, the August 2010 edition of independent show Margin consolidated it's position as the most directional & credible UK trade event for streetwear and young fashion which, even at the 19th edition, still has the pulling power to attract leading retailers from quality stores, many of whom do not attend regular tradeshows.

Carefully edited, the premium selection of new and established labels, handpicked to exhibit at Margin, proved too strong a draw for key independent streetwear purveyors including Slam City Skates and Supra from London, Ran and Wood from Manchester, The Consortium and Richmond Classics from Bournemouth, Switch from the Isle of Wight, Urban Industry from Eastbourne, Cooshti and My Yard from Bristol, and Wellgosh from Leicester.

Visiting buyers and press enthused about the mix of credible established brands such as Silas (who selected Margin for their trade show debut to mark their return to Europe after a four year absence), Obey, WeSC, Makia, Gravis, Duffs, and Dephect, alongside new brands making their trade launch at the show, such as 1ina100, Emilythepemily, AnyForty, KNK, Trikki, and Eva Evanovich.

Unlike many other larger trade events who welcome all-comers in an attempt to swell visitor statistics, Margin is open to buyers, press, multi-label agents & distributors only, so exhibitors were able to devote their time to dealing with serious visitors from key UK & international stores and magazines intent on making contact and doing business.

As always, Margin welcomed independent stores and boutiques from across the UK and internationally that the show is well known for attracting (such as Ace, American Retro, Boy Parker, FortyFive, Hardware, Ju-Ju, Kuji, Kusje, Lunacy, Pie in the Sky, Potassium, Soho Hip, Social, and Tyto), as well as drawing a strong following of multiples including Ark Clothing, Frontline, Joy, Moist, and Triple-S, and online players of all sizes including ASOS, Chemical Records, CX London, Extreme Pie, Grindstore, Mr Shunk, and Surfdome.

From large stores such as Bentalls and Urban Outfitters, to leading boutiques like Sarah Coggles and Paradis, Margin welcomed successful stores of all sizes, stores who remain successful by staying informed and on top of credible new brands that can generate retail excitement.

The 19th edition of the longest-running independent trade show in London also welcomed key international stores from Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Italy, and Japan, all keen to tap into UK streetwear & young fashion at Margin.

The next edition of Margin London will take place in February 2011. More information at www.margin.tv and www.margin.tv/pressroom

Margin Shop Tour Videos
13 June, 2010

UK independent street wear and fashion tradeshow Margin London have momentarily shifted focus from their exhibitors, to the independent stores and fashion boutiques across the UK that best represent what our country has to offer.
The Shop Tour video series sees Margin make the trip to a number of different independent stores across the country, from Brighton to York, taking in some of the best boutiques around including Urban Industry (Eastbourne), Boy Parker (Brighton), Chimp (Leeds) and The Rugged Standard (York). In the videos you can hear a little about the stores from the owners themselves as well as their thoughts on the Margin Tradeshow and how it has worked for them. Its a great little insight into what goes on behind the scenes at some of these locations and a chance to learn a little more about some really interesting stores.
Check below for our choice pick of the shop tours and head over to Margin on Vimeo to view more. For more on the tradeshow itself, check out the Margin London website.

My Yard SS10 Artist Collection
15 June, 2010

After a brief manufacturing delay, the Summer collection of tees and sweats from Bristol born My Yard have finally hit the shelves. The My Yard boys took a little extra time to produce the new collection to ensure that all prints and materials met the exact standard they expected, and it appears its been worth the wait.
The My Yard Summer collection contains a number of T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the work of some of the UKs most exciting and talented artists. You ll find the work of Batman, Dirty Thirty, Ben Normanton, Andy Council, Cheba and Nikill on a wide range of different coloured tees and sweats. I first picked up on My Yard at the Margin London tradeshow earlier this year and was massively impressed with the samples. Ben Normantons work is my personal favourite - clean, punchy graphics with some great illustrations.
The new range is currently available to by from the My Yard Store on Park Street in Bristol and is expected at retailers any day now, including Urban Industry and Chemical Records. The My Yard boys recently shot a lookbook for their collection, in Japan. Check some shots out below.

MARGIN PREMIERES NEW SHOP TOUR VIDEOS
Margin, the independent London trade exhibition, has turned its attention to promoting its core constituents of indie shops that keep towns and cities stocked with fresh product.

'Independent stores are a vital part of the retail landscape,' said exhibition organiser Odysseas Constantine. 'They're the stores that pick up on new designers first, at least two years before department stores and corporate multiples, and they bring excitement to shopping. After looking around online, I couldn't believe there wasn't a dedicated website promoting these forward-thinking boutiques in a credible or enticing way, so we're planning on launching a consumer-facing website later this year to promote these important shops to the public. In the meantime,' Constantine added, 'the videos are working double duty on the Margin site as well.'

The first wave of Shop Tour videos premiered on May 24 on Margin’s website, and plenty more have been planned in the following weeks. Stores featured in the first wave of Margin Shop Tours include a diverse mix of modern retailers including long-standing design emporium Sarah Coggles in York, streetwear merchants Urban Industry in Eastbourne and Chimp in Leeds, cutting-edge boutique Bespoke in Norwich, and Brighton retailers JuJu and Get Cutie. Additional stores adding some Spanish flavor include Bilbao's newest streetwear store Abricot and board wear mecca The Box in Vigo.

Margin is the longest-running independent trade show for directional men’s and women’s clothing and accessories in London. A proven successful hunting ground for key buyers & press to find new brands since the shows started over seven years ago, Margin is set to host its 19th edition in London this August.

Sportswear International #220

Sportswear International #220 Jul/Aug 2008 Spotlight: Margin London PHOTO: URBANINDUSTRY.CO.UK Odysseas Constantine, Organizer In your opinion are there too many apparel trade shows? There are a lot of trade events across Europe and the USa, but I don't think there are too many as the market has a way of eradicating excess. If a show isn't working it doesn't last long and since Margin first started presenting upscale streetwear and directional tailoring in 2002, we've seen six events come and go in London alone and there are countless others across Europe and the USA that haven't lasted. How can the trade show industry develop to accommodate an evolving fashion industry? Is there room for growth/ There is room for growth but possibly only at the expense of altering some existing events. Perhaps other shows should evolve to tailor more niche segments and then buyers from that area can decide accordingly which show to visit - for example, a small-scal event specializing in men's tailoring or women's footwear, as opposed to 'mega-shows' trying to appeal to everyine. The feedback I've had about events of 200 brands or more is that it's difficult to find the focus of the event and it ultminately becomes a scoial gathering as oppoed to a place to do business. How would you describe the general 'health' of apparel trade shows (considering the economy/retailing/competition,etc.)? I guess some other events are at the mercy of 'superbrands' and whether they choose to cut back on their exhibition budgets but [at Margin] don't have that issue. If the economy and retailing gets tougher, buyers will need focused and niche trade shows to discover fresh product targeted to their customers.

An interview with Retreat Clothing Urban Industry Store first came across Retreat Clothing about 2 years ago at the London Fashion show, Margin..yeah, ok, we dragged our heals on getting on board with some stock but hey! Better late than never! Retreat Clothing is the brainchild of Paul Sid and the designs coming from this guy are about as different and unique as you will see anywhere in the UK at the moment. Retreat Clothing doesn't bow to trends in streetwear and truly walks its own path. Urban Industry caught up with Sid one Sunday afternoon to find out where some of these mad designs come from! www.UrbanIndustry.co.uk

“Margin proved to be the gem of this seasons fashion shows! The enthusiasm from the new and up coming brands really rubbed off on us and left us feeling upbeat for the season ahead especially after just having such a difficult selling period. Margin has reminded us why we got into this game in the first place…Urban Industry will be back for sure” Urban Industry http://www.urbanindustry.co.uk/
