Reggie Bush is stuck in a precarious position right now. He’s not trying to duck a defensive end, outrun a linebacker or slip a safety. Instead, the New Orleans Saints running back is in a lot of hot water thanks to allegations he took money and favors from agents during his time at the University of Southern California in 2004 and 2005. As a result, Bush has had his name and likeness removed from the USC campus after the NCAA penalized the school’s football team mercilessly. There’s even been rumblings that he may be required to give back his Heisman Trophy at some point in the very near future.
Here at DrJays Live, we actually like Reggie Bush and all that he brings to the game (including the ladies in the box seats! What up, Kim Kardashian?!). And we’d like to see him come out of this whole thing in one piece. So we put together a list of five reasons Reggie should give up his Heisman Trophy voluntarily. Not only would it end this whole mess—it’d also help a young man clear his name. So, what do ya say, Reg?
1. Giving back the trophy would stop the speculation. In case, you didn’t catch it, the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings kicked off the NFL regular season last night. Football is back! For Reggie, though, all that means is the media will have access to him every week for the next four months or so. If he wants to avoid questions about USC and the Heisman Trophy, his best bet is to give back the Heisman now before he’s forced to do it. It’s like ripping off a Band-Aid, Reggie—just do it quickly and get it over with.
2. It would help the University of Southern California’s reputation immensely. If Reggie Bush cares about anyone at USC, if he ever wants to go back to watch a game or just to roam the hallowed hallways, if he has an inkling of regret about what he did during his days at the school, he should give back his Heisman Trophy now. The school has already given back their version of it, so Reggie doing it as well would help erase the dark cloud that’s currently covering the school, the football team and the current coaching staff.
3. It would be a savvy PR move. Right now, Reggie Bush has a chance to get back on the good side of football fans everywhere. By returning the Heisman, he’ll essentially be admitting that he did something wrong, even if he doesn’t come right out and say it. And Americans love apologies and love giving people second chances after they apologize. So by giving back his trophy, Bush would be saying, “I’m sorry,” without actually doing it and would probably get praised by anyone and everyone who watches, covers, or writes about football. That’s PR 101, people.
4. It would prove that Reggie Bush understands his role as a role model.
Somewhere out there, a 15-year-old kid is dreaming of making it to the NFL. He’s practicing out in the sandlot, working hard in the weight room and getting approached by all types of people who want a piece of his success. If he sees that Bush did things the wrong way and still succeeded, then why shouldn’t he follow his path? If he sees that Bush did things the wrong way and had to give back his Heisman Trophy? Well, now the kid might actually think before he acts and steer clear of agents, runners and anyone else who could jeopardize his college football career. It’s as simple as that.
5. It would increase the Saints’ chances of repeating as NFL champions. At some point—in Week 2 or 6 or 10 of the NFL season—this whole Heisman Trophy thing is going to become a distraction to the Saints. It hasn’t happened yet, because everything is still speculation and hearsay. But what’s gonna happen if the Saints’ offense is sputtering, Bush is struggling and a report comes out about something Bush did five years ago and the Saints are asked to respond? It’ll become a distraction. And the last thing an NFL team that’s focused on making another title run needs is another distraction. It’s just one more reason Reggie Bush should give back his Heisman Trophy now.
During the MAGIC fashion show last month, I grabbed Jameel Spencer (Chief Marketing Officer for Rocawear) to get the scoop on the brand’s sexy new Fall/Winter campaign starring Trey Songz and Melanie Fiona.
Jameel reflects on the difficulty of finding a new male ambassador because Jay-Z is so “known and synonymous with the brand” and divulges how Trey’s involvement with Rocawear now extends further than a simple paid endorsement. He touches on Rocawear’s current concept of spotlighting “who’s next” after celebrating a successful 10-year run at the top of the urban apparel space, and the unique “day in the life” approach the team took to this particular shoot.
Trey and Melanie are scheduled to feature in the brand’s Spring/Summer 2011 campaign also, which will again be shot by Anthony Mandler (the director of many Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West videos).
Football season is here and that means it’s time for all of the fantasy football coaches to prepare their lineups for the new season. While most drafts have concluded, there may or may not be some players lingering around for you to pick up. If your draft is coming up, I’ve got some sleeper picks that could bring you to the holy land. After all, fantasy leagues aren’t won in the first five rounds, they are won in the last half of the draft. Those that picked up Pierre Garcon and Jamaal Charles late last season should know this all too well.
- Dexter McCluster (Kansas City Chiefs) RB/WR: The Ole Miss product is a spark plug just waiting to have a breakout rookie season. During the preseason, McCluster played wide receiver, running back and returned punts and kicks—and was successful at all positions. The Chiefs have already tabbed McCluster as their “big play” guy so expect him to give your team some much needed points.
- Malcom Floyd (San Diego Chargers) WR: With Vincent Jackson pretty much out of the picture, expect Floyd to be the beneficiary of Phillip Rivers accurate throws. Jackson had a 1000+ yard season in a powerful Charger offense, no reason to think that Floyd can’t build upon the 700+ yard season he had last year.
- Mike Williams (Seattle Seahawks) WR: The former USC standout never really amounted to much during his NFL tenure. After stints with the Lions, Raiders and Titans, Williams and his overweight frame were bounced from the league. But he’s had a resurgence as a Seattle Seahawk this preseason with his old USC coach Pete Carroll at the helm. With TJ Houshmandzadeh getting the boot, Williams will step into the role as #1 wide receiver. He may go undrafted in many leagues, but he’s definitely one to watch for.
- Matt Moore (Carolina Panthers) QB: The former undrafted free agent from Oregon State quietly made his way into the Panthers starting QB position after Jake Delhomme went to Cleveland. If his 2009 season is any indication (1,783 yards passing, 11 TDs and 4 wins in 5 starts) Moore will be a good insurance pick at the QB position. As a matter of fact, with Steve Smith as your primary target, Moore could be a starting QB for some fantasy teams in deeper leagues.
- Zach Miller (Oakland Raiders) TE: In a woeful Raider offense, Miller tallied up 805 yards receiving and 3 TDs. Now that Jason Campbell (who made a pro bowler out of Chris Cooley) replacing the horrid JaMarcus Russell, expect Miller’s numbers to balloon. It also helps that the Raider wideouts aren’t very reliable. While many fantasy coaches will chase the more glamorous names like Gonzalez, Witten and Clark, Miller will surely be left for a mid- to late-round selection.
The talk of the town has been Willow, the daughter of Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith, and her signing with Jay-Z and his Roc Nation imprint. While the song “Whip My Hair” undoubtedly has hit potential, one has to wonder if Willow is ready for the spotlight.
She’s nine-years-old but has two parents who understand what the life of a superstar is all about. Although neither had the attention that Willow has at the tender age of 9. Twelve-year-old Jaden Smith made his first film appearance in 2006′s The Pursuit Of Happyness at the age of 8, so this wouldn’t be their first child to step into the spotlight. However, being a young girl the music business can be difficult. We’ve all heard the stories of child stars forced to grow up too soon, their childhoods becoming virtually non-existent.
On the Ryan Seacrest show, Jay-Z stated that Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder were both very young when they started in the music business. However, we all know Michael Jackson’s life appeared to be more enjoyed by us than by him. Not to mention, times have changed. Who knows what effect the music business could have on young Willow. But then again, if her parents have already prepared her for this, who are we to say when it is too soon? As long as everything stays age appropriate, I personally have no problem with it. The moment she starts looking 19 at 9 with too high heels and too short skirts, I’ll take issue with her stardom.
Willow could quite possibly be the next big star on the pop scene. She may not have the vocal chops of a young MJ or Stevie, but she has the look and apparently understands how to make a hit record. It’s really up to Will and Jada to control her future without allowing their daughter to get out of control. Because—especially in this day and age—being a star is such a short-lived affair. Manage it well and you can be like a Malcolm Jamal Warner who strive well beyond their career on television ends.
Or you can end up being Montana Fishburne and Paris Hilton (both are a stretch). Nobody wants that.
Yesterday was day one of New York Fashion Week and last night I was part of the hair styling team for the Jen Kao Spring 2011 show at Milk Studios.
While the likes of the beautiful Kelly Rowland and Jessica White (pictured above) were seated front row at the show, I was toiling away backstage making sure the models were runway ready. Jen Kao’s theme this year was desert-inspired— “where desert princes find their zombie brides,” according to the designer. Alrighty then! The combination did make for some stunning gowns; Kao’s long white dresses were the highlight of the collection.
Check out my exclusive candids from behind-the-scenes:

The details surrounding this release are sparse. Mum is the word as far as Nice Kicks is concerned regarding their latest sneaker collaboration. If you’re an inquisitive mind like me and do some digging you’ll unearth the facts that this is another collaboration between Nice Kicks, Asics, and Capo to the David Z throne Ronnie Fieg. The only visuals provided are a teaser shot of the back of the kick, but they’ve already got the blog-boys going crazy. If you’re memory is a little foggy, the initial collaborative sneaker by these three entities is pictured below. As far as version 2.0, all we can say for sure is that they’re predominantly gray, and will release some time in October. Happy hunting.
I’m speechless and appalled—some people are beyond redemption, including Gregory King, the biological father of Julian King, the tragic nephew of everyone’s favorite dream girl, Jennifer Hudson. Little Julian was only seven-years-old when he, along with Jennifer’s mother and older brother, were brutally murdered by William Balfour, the estranged husband of the American Idol alum’s sister, Julia.
When the murders occurred two years ago, I personally wondered where Julian’s real father was and why there wasn’t ever any talk of, or from, him. You would think that as his father, King would’ve come out and publicly pleaded for the safe return of his son during the brief period authorities frantically searched for him, holding out hope he’d be found alive (the bodies of Jennifer’s mom and brother were found in the family home, but the body of little Julian wasn’t found until three days later).
Fast-forward to the present, and all of a sudden King has a lot to say, and unfortunately, it’s ridiculously disgusting. According to King, Jennifer may possibly be a Freemason who sacrificed Julian for her career and success. The accusation is as hard to type as it was to read, and it’s extremely pathetic and a shockingly desperate attempt to garner attention for his aspiring music career and album. This dude needs to just do us all a favor and crawl back into the sewer from which he came. Check out his accusation in its entirety in the video down below:
Late last week, Craigslist replaced the link to the controversial adult section featured on the page with a very noticeable black “censored” bar. Since then, the image has come down and the adult section seems to be discontinued (for now). Is this censorship a step in the right direction or a slap in the face?
After complaints from several sources such as NGOs (nongovernmental organizations), interest groups, and nonprofits began to cause public outcry against the adult services section (with some calling it the Walmart of prostitution), politicians in several areas of the U.S. have sprung into action.
Attorneys general in several states are disappointed with the effort (or lack thereof) which has been made by Craigslist personnel to screen the services and ensure money is not exchanged for sexual acts and/or favors (a practice pretty much implied by the mere existence of an adult services category). Activists and special interest groups are also targeting Craigslist, accusing the site of providing easy and reliable transactions for those involved in human trafficking and sexual encounters with children.
Of course there is the argument that Craigslist simply provides a forum in which people make their own decisions as to what to post. The problems of prostitution and human trafficking exist beyond the scope of Craigslist and making the online classifieds the scapegoat will do nothing to end either of them. Some are even beginning to question the broader implications of any type of regulations/enforcement placed on Craigslist by the government for the rest of the Web. Will the Internet change forever and go from relatively free and boundless to overrun with stifling regulation?
It doesn’t seem we need to worry about these things just yet. The issue here is not really about the ‘Net being regulated. It’s about companies doing their best to monitor and report illegal activity transpiring on their sites, something the Craigslist crew has vowed to do.
After a little investigative reporting from CNN, it doesn’t seem that those promises were as serious as they should have been. Case in point:
We know what you’re thinking, and yes, she just bum-rushed the founder, Craig Newmark, to the point he was speechless and defenseless. Such interviews don’t usually have very coherent or articulate answers because the speakers are caught completely off guard. Furthermore, while Newmark is a founder (and is believed to be a majority owner) of Craigslist, he is not in any actual management position within the company. Of course, this prompted a response—penned by CEO Jim Buckmaster—via the company blog.
At the end of the day, people are just looking for some follow-through from a company which has provided a vehicle for some pretty heinous things to go down. Legal wrangling aside, this is something the company itself promised to handle. Businesses, whether bricks-and-mortar or online, have an obligation to ensure the law is enforced and people (especially children) are safe. Removing the adult-services category (in the U.S. only) may be a step in the “right” direction, but we suggest keeping an eye on the personals section as well.
Until then, the fact will remain that “pimpin’ ain’t easy”—unless, of course, you’re on Craigslist.
