MARGIN LONDON

Written by Sabrina Bangladesh / 09 Aug 2010

Established eight years ago, Margin is the industry event for new brands who can sometimes get overlooked in a market overflowing with labels that all blur to look the same.

Choosing only the brands with something new to offer, Margin is held every year in London at the South Molton Music Rooms. The first room holds the newest start up labels on their first collections, while the second room hosts the labels that have a few collections under their belt.

Margin is not overwhelmingly huge, but in a space that is both intimate yet roomy enough to fit the friendly designers and their stalls. Dumpe Fresh, a well established French label, worn by the likes of Fatman Scoop and Flo-Rida are now launching over in the UK; Trikki, a bright and bold label run by brother and sister duo, Rikki and Nikki who visit their factory in Portugal on a regular basis, to make sure that they're keeping up with ethical standards; and Emily the Pemily, a designer who screenprints in her spare room were my personal favourites.

The second room held a veritable cornucopia of treasures. 1 in A (One in a Hundred), owned by friends Freddie and Aldo, make a limited run of only 100 t-shirts, and commission fine artists and present the t-shirts as a piece of art. Most recently worn by the Bombay Bicycle Club, 1 in A hope to launch in high-end small boutiques later this year.

What struck me is how each designer had their own personal story behind each of their pieces. Forget what you think about streetwear, it's not all hoodies and t-shirts. MARGIN LONDON
